- Story Text:Police on Thursday (March 23) fired tear gas during a protest in Paris as part of a day of demonstrations across France against President Emmanuel Macron and his plan to raise the pension age.
In central Paris, where a demonstration had been mainly peaceful, police used tear gas after protesters threw projectiles and set bins ablaze.
Small groups of "Black Bloc" anarchists were seen among the protesters. Unions fear that protests could turn more violent if there continues to be no political response from the government.
Protests against the new law, which raises the pension age by two years to 64 and accelerates a planned increase in the number of years one must work to draw a full pension, have drawn huge crowds in rallies organized by unions since January.
Since then, the past seven nights have seen demonstrations in Paris and other cities with rubbish bins set ablaze and clashes with police.
Opinion polls have long shown that a majority of voters were opposed to delaying retirement age.
