Supporters of Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga cheered and danced despite a ban on their demonstration on Monday (March 27) in protests that began last week against the government and high food prices.
Supporters gathered around Odinga's convoy as it passed through neighbourhoods in Nairobi. Many danced and cheered, while others blew plastic horns or chanted "Ruto must go", in reference to President William Ruto.
Police used tear gas several times on the protesters, as well as water cannons. A Reuters witness said some supporters threw stones at the police.
Reuters footage showed a crowd of supporters running from a cloud of tear gas as the protest went on into the evening.
Odinga has called for the twice-weekly protests indefinitely, citing the high cost of staples such as maize flour, which has kept inflation high. He also accuses Ruto of cheating in last year's presidential election.
He reiterated a call on Monday for rallies on Thursday (March 30) via Twitter.
