- Story Text: Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou visited several landmarks in China's eastern city of Nanjing on Tuesday (March 28) while embarking on a landmark trip.
Ma waved to residents in Nanjing from a vehicle after touring the China Modern History Museum, which served from 1927–1949 as an office for the President of the Republic of China, which Taiwan is known as formally.
He later stopped at the John Rabe House, where an eponymous German businessman honoured in China for his role in protecting Chinese from Japanese troops lived.
Ma, in office from 2008–2016, is the first former or current Taiwanese president to visit China since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 at the end of a civil war with the Communists.
He is not scheduled to meet with any senior Chinese leaders on this trip.
