- Story Text: Close to 500 people took to the streets of San Salvador on Tuesday (March 28) to demand freedom for their relatives who, according to them, were unfairly jailed by the government’s state of exception.
This week marks one year since the beginning of the state of emergency declared by El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele as a strategy to confront gang violence.
Demonstrator Maria Silvia marched demanding freedom for her daughter Lourdes Colon, who was imprisoned nine months ago. Silvia says she and other relatives of detainees want President Bukele to free the innocent.
During the protest, demonstrators also demanded the end of the state of emergency.
Close to 2% of El Salvador’s population has been detained under the state of emergency, government data show.
In a report released Tuesday, the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said at least 65,000 people, including children, have been detained in the country in the past year, and that the arrests appear to be based on unsubstantiated investigations, crude profiles of physical appearance or the social background of detainees.
