  • Story Text: The European Union’s migration policy needs to be “better steered” and illegal immigration must be limited, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in Berlin on Friday (March 24).
    Faeser hosted a meeting on a state secretary level on European migration policy with representatives from France, Sweden, Belgium, Spain and Italy.
    Sweden’s representative Anders Hall told reporters it would be “difficult to reach agreements. There are many different national standpoints.
    Hall added “it will take very difficult compromises from all participating countries. It will be probably a solution where nobody is happy with everything but we are at least equally unhappy with the joint solution.”
    In February, EU leaders said they would tighten their borders to keep away unwanted immigrants, with some seeking more fences and walls while others would rather spend the money on improving living conditions in worse-off parts of the world.
    Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and Denmark were among the 27 national leaders meeting in EU hub Brussels to express concern about increasing irregular arrivals, with some 330,000 border crossings recorded last year.
