- Story Text: Another line of people gathered in front of the Roosevelt Hotel in the New York City borough of Manhattan on Wednesday (August 1) morning.
The hotel, which shut down in 2020 after serving almost 100 years, is now operating as an 'asylum seeker arrival center' as New York City struggles to keep up with the continued flow of migrants to the city.
The past few days has seen an overflow of migrants outside the hotel. And indeed, a sign outside the hotel reads, "We are currently at capacity."
New York City says that it has provided services to 90,000 migrants since last spring and that nearly 55,000 remain in its care.
Thousands of those migrants arrived on buses sent by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican who has tried to shift the burden of receiving them to Democratic strongholds like New York.
