- Story Text: South Korea's government approved the spending of an emergency fund worth millions to ensure the safety of attendees at a global Scouts event, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said on Friday (August 4), after hundreds of the teenage participants fell ill this week due to unusually hot weather.
The government held an extraordinary Cabinet meeting and approved the spending of emergency fund of 6.9 billion won ($5,262,037) to support World Scout Jamboree, Han said during a news conference.
At least 600 people at the World Scout Jamboree, which kicked off in southwestern Buan on Tuesday (August 1), have so far been treated for heat-related ailments, officials say.
The event coincides with the highest heat warning by authorities in four years, as temperatures in some parts of the country topped 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit) this week.
