- Story Text: Lawyers for one of the main parties in Pakistan's ruling coalition cheered as a court in Islamabad sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to three years in prison on Saturday (August 5) for illegally selling state gifts.
Lawyers for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chanted slogans against Khan, after a district court reached a guilty verdict, sending a convoy of police vehicles on route to the eastern city of Lahore to arrest the 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician.
Meanwhile, Khan's lawyer Intazar Hussain Panjutha said the case was not decided on merit and the legal team was not given sufficient time to argue their case. Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said in a statement they had already filed another appeal to the Supreme Court earlier on Saturday.
The sentence relates to an inquiry conducted by the election commission, which found Khan guilty of unlawfully selling state gifts during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022. Khan has denied any wrongdoing.
