- Story Text: India's opposition bloc, I.N.D.I.A alliance, on Sunday (July 30) met the governor of northeastern state of Manipur and submitted a memorandum where sectarian violence has killed 180 people since May.
At a news conference, leader of India's main opposition party Congress party, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the situation in Manipur could turn into a national security issue.
Residents and media say the violence has forced tens of thousands to flee their homes, while villages have been reduced to ashes, and women subjected to sexual assault.
The spark that ignited this violence was a court order to consider extending economic benefits reserved for the Kuki tribals to the Meiteis. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
