- Story Text: Hundreds of thousands of young people who spent the night at a gigantic outdoor venue by Lisbon's Tagus river woke up at the crack of dawn on Sunday (August 6) to see Pope Francis one last time before he heads back to Rome.
Francis arrived in Portugal on August 2 for the week-long World Youth Day, the world's largest gathering of young Catholics, and took part in several events. He will celebrate the closing Mass at Parque Tejo, a new venue created for a festival that has been dubbed the Catholic Woodstock.
Youngsters showed off their dance moves as the sun rose and Portuguese priest DJ Guilherme played upbeat songs to energise the crowd before the pontiff's arrival.Â
An estimated 1.5 million people packed the venue on Saturday for an evening prayer service with the the pope, waiting for hours under the scorching sun.
Temperatures on Saturday (August 5) reached 38 Celsius in Lisbon but were expected to rise to 41C on Sunday.
