- Story Text: Supporters at Sydney's FIFA Fan Festival in Tumbalong Park were jubilant on Monday evening (August 7) as they watched the Matildas beat Denmark 2-0 to reach the Women's World Cup quarter-finals.
The fans were equally delighted to see captain Sam Kerr come on to the pitch as a second half substitute having missed her team's first four matches due to injury.
After the victory the supporters stayed to party and soak in the atmosphere as the co-hosts keep their dream alive.
A few kilometres away at Stadium Australia the 75,784 fans, who crammed into the stadium built for the 2000 Olympics, also rose as one to greet Kerr as she came on to the pitch in the 78th minute.
Afterwards, Kerr admitted it was a relief, but conceded that her team mates had probably not needed her contribution to reach the quarter-finals.
Kerr has spent much of Australia's first four matches recovering from a calf injury sustained on the eve of their opener but finally made her tournament bow with the Matildas already 2-0 up against Denmark in their last 16 clash.
They will next play either France or Morocco in Brisbane on Saturday (August 12).
