- Story Text: Concerns about sanitation and food, on top of one of the worst heatwaves to hit South Korea, drove the British contingent at the World Scout Jamboree to leave the event, the head of UK Scouts said on Monday (August 7).
Matt Hyde, UK Scouts' chief executive, told Reuters the group decided to withdraw its more than 4,000 scouts on Friday (August 4) for their own safety, a move that was followed by the U.S.
Britain sent the largest contingent to the jamboree, the first global scout gathering since the pandemic.
Hyde's comments came as the jamboree's organisers announced an evacuation of its 36,000 participants, mostly teenagers, from the campsite in southern Korea starting Tuesday (August 8) due to an incoming typhoon, after extreme heat had earlier caused hundreds of scouts to fall ill.
