- Story Text: Ukraine's nuclear chief said on Monday (August 7) that international nuclear watchdog experts at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant had "very limited access" to the facilities.
The head of Ukraine's state nuclear energy company, Petro Kotin, made his comments on a surprise visit to a Ukrainian nuclear plant undisclosed for security reasons.
He added that the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) experts only had access to the roofs of two nuclear units and that there were areas at the plant "they just do not have access to."
The U.N. nuclear watchdog has been granted access to areas of the plant in southern Ukraine a month after requesting it, and has found no explosives, it said in a statement on Friday (August 4).
The IAEA said on July 5 that access to the roofs of the two units and parts of the turbine halls was essential.
Ukraine's armed forces had said the day before that "operational data" showed "explosive devices" had been placed on those two roofs.
