- Story Text: Thousands marched in the streets of Islamabad on Sunday (March 10) bearing Palestinian flags.
The march, organised by Pakistan's Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party, was in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza ahead of start of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
The current war in Gaza, which is now in its sixth month, began on Oct. 7 when Hamas fighters stormed into Israel, killing some 1,200 Israelis and taking more than a hundred hostage.
Israel's relentless campaign against Hamas has caused increasing alarm across the world as the growing risk of famine threatens to add to a death toll that has already passed 31,000.
"If you (Pakistan government) cannot fight a jihad against Israel, then allow millions of Pakistani people who want to save Gaza. We want to go and save the Palestinian people. We want to go there. We want to give our lives for them," Siraj ul Haq, head of JI, told the crowd.
He threatened to march to the U.S. embassy in Islamabad with "millions and millions of people" from across Pakistan on the last Friday of Ramadan if there is no ceasefire.
