Summary:On September 1 1969, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi came to power in the oil-rich north African state of Libya. Gaddafi's revolution ousted the monarchy of King Idris and replaced it with a rabidly Muslim regime. Soon after he had seized power, Gaddafi ordered British and American forces from their bases in Libya and nationalised Libya's oil industry.
