Voters in India have come out to polling stations to cast their ballot in the first phase of the general elections on Friday (April 19), despite parts of the country facing heatwave conditions.
Polling stations have set up tents outside stations to provide shade to the voters waiting in queue for their turn, most of whom wore headscarves to stay protected from the harsh sun.
The weather office issued an alert for severe heatwave conditions in the southern region of the country, including Tamil Nadu where voters showed up in huge numbers.
Temperature in the state capital of Chennai was expected to reach a high of 39 degrees Celsius (102.2 Farenheit), according to India Meteorological Department.
In the first phase, which is the largest of the seven phases, 166 million voters in 102 constituencies across 21 states and territories will vote, including Tamil Nadu in the south, Arunachal Pradesh on the Himalayan frontier with China, and the most populous Uttar Pradesh in the north.
