Of course, the earthquake is a natural disaster. Thankfully, it seems that in Hualien, earthquakes are quite frequent, but the damage to only one building wasn't very significant, there weren't many chain reactions. In that sense, it's a great fortune amidst an unfortunate situation.” POLICE OFFICERS LOOKING AT TILTED BUILDING VARIOUS OF HEAVY MACHINERY AT WORK HUALIEN, TAIWAN (APRIL 5, 2024) (REUTERS) (NIGHT SHOTS) RESCUE TEAM OPERATING EQUIPMENT EXCAVATOR BREAKING WALL DEMOLITION IN PROGRESS

- Story Text: Residents in Taiwan's quake-hit northern county of Hualien on Friday (April 5) watched as authorities tore down a large building damaged in Wednesday's (April 3) 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
Excavators could be seen chipping apart the quake-hit Uranus building well into dusk on Friday evening, as the building has remained tilted since the earthquake. Local residents like 27-year-old Kao Yi-shan stopped by to catch a glimpse of the Uranus before its complete demolition.
"I feel that it's only after arriving at the scene that one realises how truly small humans are in the face of nature, especially following a natural disaster. This building, being nearly 50 years old, has also reached the end of its lifespan," she said.
Searchers discovered two more bodies, bringing the death toll to 12, after Wednesday's quake struck the sparsely populated, largely rural eastern county of Hualien.
