- Story Text: Supporters of Alassane Ouattara protest in the streets of Bouake shortly before his opponent Laurent Gbagbo is sworn in as president after Ivory Coast's contested presidential election.
Ivory Coast's incumbent Laurent Gbagbo was sworn in on Saturday (December 4) as president for the next five years in a ceremony broadcast on state television, amid rows over the validity of his victory.
The west African state's top legal body declared Gbagbo president after it overturned on Friday (December 3) a decision by the country's election commission to name rival Alassane Ouattara winner of a Nov. 28 poll.
Supporters of Ouattara said their candidate should become president.
"They gave us two results. We find that the first result is valid. The result given by the CEI [election commission]. They are telling us too that the Constitutional Council gave another result proclaiming Laurent Gbagbo as president. We don't agree with this, that's why we took to the streets," protester Diaby Samba said.
The Constitutional Council, whose word is final on the result, said Ouattara's win was invalid due to widespread vote-rigging. But world leaders have rejected Gbagbo's victory and recognised Ouattara as the rightful winner of the poll. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
