- Story Text:Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian and wounded four others during a raid of a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Friday (April 19), Palestinian medics said.
One of people shot and wounded in Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarm was a volunteer medic, said the Palestine Red Crescent Society.
The Israeli army issued a statement late on Friday saying they have 'eliminated a number of terrorists' from Nur al-Shams refugee camp and 'arrested a number of wanted persons'. During the raid, the Israeli forces also found explosives and ammunition, it added.
Violence in the West Bank was already on the rise before Israel's assault on Gaza, which was launched following an Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel. It has escalated since, with stepped-up Israeli military raids, settler violence and Palestinian street attacks.
In addition to more than 33,000 Palestinians killed by Israel in Gaza, according to Hamas-run authorities, the Palestinian Health Ministry says at least 466 people in the West Bank have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers, among them armed fighters.
In the same period, at least 13 Israelis, including two members of Israel's security forces, have been killed by Palestinians in the West Bank, according to an Israeli tally.
The West Bank is among territories Israel occupied in a 1967 Middle East war and where Palestinians have long aimed to establish an independent state that would also include the Gaza Strip and have East Jerusalem as its capital.
