- Story Text:China suggested on Thursday (April 18) that the United States was being hypocritical after U.S. President Joe Biden called China "xenophobic" while campaigning in Pennsylvania.
"Are you talking about China or the U.S. itself?" Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a regular news briefing on Thursday.
President Biden also accused Chinese steel companies of “cheating” and unfair competition in the same speech on Wednesday (April 17), aimed at pleasing steelworkers in the swing state of Pennsylvania.
The Biden administration is proposing sharply higher U.S. tariffs on Chinese metal products and pressuring neighbouring Mexico to prohibit China from selling its metal products to the United States indirectly from there.
These and other measures invite blowback from China at a time of already heightened tensions between the world's two biggest economies.
