- Story Text: A violent ruckus broke out amid voting in India's northeastern Manipur state on Friday (April 19) despite heightened security in the conflict-prone region.
Two men barged into the polling booth, vandalised it as they dragged a member of India's opposition Congress Party and opened fire on the streets, said polling official Surbala Devi.
Damaged Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), charred documents and bullet shells were found by authorities at the scene.
At least 70 vulnerable electoral constituencies were identified in the state by district election officers where CCTV cameras were set up to monitor the polling stations for a secure election.
Conflict in the state first broke out over the potential extension of affirmative action rights available to the Kukis people, who form 16 per cent of the state's population, to the dismay of the majority of Meiteis, who make up 53 per cent.
Manipur, with its two seats, both of which were won by BJP and its ally in 2019, has little impact on national politics and the 543-seat parliament. The BJP's manifesto does not even mention the state. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
