- Title: TIMELINE: A look back at Israel-Hamas war in 2023 as seventh month nears
- Date: 5th January 2024
- Summary: Aid trucks were finally allowed to go through the Rafah border, on October 21, from Egypt into Gaza for the first time since the blockade of the enclave that began on October 7. U.S. President Joe Biden said earlier in the week week that agreement had been reached for 20 aid trucks to cross into the Gaza Strip after checks by the Palestinian Red Crescent following days of diplomatic wrangling over conditions for delivering the relief. But the 20 trucks are just a fraction of what Gaza needs with 2.3 million people running out of food, water, medicines and fuel in what the United Nations says is a budding humanitarian catastrophe. The United Nations said the convoy included life-saving supplies that would be received and distributed by the Palestinian Red Crescent. Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which rules Gaza, said the delivery included medicine and limited amounts of food but not fuel. Gaza normally receives more than 100 aid trucks in peace times. Israel and Hamas have been at war in Gaza since gunmen from the Palestinian militant group that runs the enclave attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and capturing 253 hostages.
Israel responded with a military campaign in which about 33,000 Palestinians had been killed by early April in six months of warfare, according to medical officials in the enclave.
