- Story Text: Substitute Hameur Bouazza struck two minutes into extra time to lift Algeria to a 3-2 upset win over Ivory Coast in a thrilling African Nations Cup quarter-final between two World Cup-bound teams on Sunday (January 24).
Algeria twice came from behind in normal time to set up a semi-final clash with either twice defending champions Egypt or Cameroon.
Ivorian fans back home were furious their team had let victory slip from their hands.
"I feel that our players don't actually love Ivory Coast. Honestly, we should have the guts to say that. Drogba and his gang don't like Ivory Coast," said student Thierry Bagnon.
It was all a bit too much for some as one supporter fainted when midfielder Bouazza scored in extra time to sent Algeria into last four.
"This is hurting too much, this is hurting too much," said another student Marie Chantal Coulibaly.
The defeat left Ivory Coast, who were unbeaten in their last 23 matches, without a continental title since 1992 despite boasting numerous top players, while Algeria can still dream of a first Nations Cup triumph since 1990. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
