- Story Text: New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon met his Thai counterpart Srettha Thavisin in Bangkok on Wednesday (April 17) in what was Luxon's first official visit to the Southeast Asian region since taking office.
Luxon was welcomed by Srettha before the two leaders sat down for a bilateral meeting and attended a ceremony where signed agreements were exchanged to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, including education and the aviation industry. Thailand and New Zealand also agreed to upgrade their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership by 2026, according to a statement from Luxon's office.
Luxon's trip to Thailand, the first made by a New Zealand prime minister since 2013, came after a visit to Singapore. Luxon will end his three-country Southeast Asian tour with a trip to the Philippines before returning to New Zealand on April 21, local media reported.
