- Story Text: A pioneering step towards the education of the blind in the Ivory Coast was taken on Friday (25 April), when Mme. Therese Houphouet-Boigny -- wife of the President -- laid the foundation stone of the country's new Blind Welfare Institute in Abidjan.
The project is being financed entirely by the Swiss charitable organisation Caritas-Suisse, at a cost of about 90 million CFA francs.
Plans for the project have been afoot for the last two years, aided by the advice of the World Organisation for the Welfare of the Blind, and by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Besides offering facilities for a basic education, the institute will also provide opportunity for vocational training. It's expected that blind pupils from Senegal and Gabon will also be educated there.
