The President of Lebanon, Mr Amin Gemayel, held talks with President Ronald Reagan in Washington on October 19. Mr Gemayel had addressed the United Nations General Assembly the previous day, telling members that the Lebanese people wanted the withdrawal of all foreign troops from their soil. His talks with President Reagan were expected to provide a starting point for the Lebanese government's plans to extend control over their country. President Reagan told newsmen after the discussions that the United States reaffirmed its support for Lebanese sovereignty. He added that President Gemayel could rely on the US for help in restoring peace to Lebanon. The Lebanese President said that US commitment to a free, democratic Lebanon had been fundamental to the survival of the Lebanese people. He added that the Lebanese government intended to fulfill its responsibility to the goals set out by the United States. Secretary of State George Shultz and Secretary of Defence Caspar Weinberger were also present at the meetings, but made no comment on the situation.
