- Story Text: Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo got a hero's welcome in
Kosovo as he kicked off a global drive against poverty and
made a financial donation to a primary school.
After meeting United Nations administrator Bernard
Kouchner in Pristina on Monday (September 27), the Inter Milan
striker was mobbed by thousands of people when he flew to
Djakovica, arriving in the town in an armoured personnel
carrier provided by Italian forces in the region.
Spectators in the town, known as Gjakova in Albanian,
cheered, chanted Ronaldo's name and waved signs of welcome.
Ronaldo is one of many celebrities lined up by the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to back its 'Teams to End
Poverty' campaign. The initiative aims to stimulate new
donations and projects to tackle poverty around the world.
The former PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona player handed over
a cheque for an unspecified amount to help the Mustafa Bakija
school get back on its feet after the conflict between Serbs
and ethnic Albanians in June.
UNDP officials said Ronaldo himself had chosen to support
the school for ethnic Albanians, which suffered damage in the
conflict and was used by Serb forces during NATO's bombing of
Yugoslavia this year.
More often seen in the blue and black shirt of Inter or
the yellow of Brazil, Ronaldo donned a jacket with the logo of
the charity Caritas, which is helping the school, over his
blazer.
