- Story Text: Indonesia Safari Park welcomed a new addition to its herd of Sumatran elephants on Monday (January 3), with the arrival of a male baby elephant.
The birth of the baby is a success for the zoo and conservation activities of Sumatran elephants whose natural habitat is shrinking due to deforestation. The park started with 20 elephants in 1985 but the number has more than doubled now to 45.
"The elephant was born on January 3. A half an hour after he was born he could stand and an hour later he could find his mother breast and start suckling, that is his natural instinct," Mulyono, an elephant keeper at the park, who, like many Indonesians go by one name.
The calf was named "Januar" after the month he was born in.
"The park now has 43 elephants in the exhibition area and adding Januar and his mother there are 45 Sumatran elephants," added Mulyono The World Wildlife Fund has said Sumatran elephants, a subspecies of the Asian elephant found only in Indonesia, are threatened with extinction.
The group said the elephant population on the island has fallen by about 35 percent, from an estimated 2,800-5,000 in 1992, to 2,400-2,800 in 2007. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
