- Story Text:South African pop star Tyla captivated crowds during sold-out homecoming shows in Cape Town and Pretoria last week, solidifying her global status to local fans.
The 22-year-old singer, whose hit song "Water" won the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024, showcased her blend of African rhythms and pop music.
Tyla's former high school teachers in Johannesburg recalled her exceptional talent in extracurricular activities, noting her growth as a performer over the years.
"When it comes to singing, she grew. You know every year you can see growth, you can see that voice maturing every year," said Tyla's former high school choir teacher, Jennifer Naka.
Fans at the concerts praised Tyla for representing South Africa on the world stage, with many viewing her as an ambassador for both local and international music.
"She just put us on the map and she inspired so many of us to also be in the entertainment industry," said Orofile Mokoto, a fan attending the Pretoria show.
Due to high demand and social media buzz around her performances, organizers have added an extra show to Tyla's homecoming tour on January 18 next year.
