- Story Text: People gathered to celebrate in the streets of Qamishli on Sunday (December 8), after Syrian rebels announced that they have ousted President Bashar al-Assad.
Former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad's square in the northeastern Syrian city was a focal point to mark the celebrations, as crowds gathered chanting and waving flags of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces.
Local Syrian Resident Delbret Rasho described the moment as historic, saying, “Syria will return better than before, with peace prevailing across the country.”
"We went out and brought the children from home and went out to celebrate with the world and this is what should have happened a long time ago," Rasho told Reuters.
Syrian rebels declared President Bashar al-Assad's ouster after seizing control of Damascus on Sunday, ending his family's iron-fisted rule after more than 13 years of civil war in a seismic moment for the Middle East.
The Islamist rebels also dealt a major blow to the influence of Russia and Iran in the region, key allies who propped up Assad during critical moments in the civil war.
