- Story Text: Saudi Arabian Deputy Minister of Electricity, Dr. Saleh al-Awaji, inaugurated the 15th International Show for Electricity, Lighting, Power Generation, Water Technology, and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) for Saudi Arabia at the Riyadh Exhibition Centre on Monday (May 7).
Leading Saudi Arabian and international companies promoted their products at the event, which was attended by government representatives, investors and buyers from all over the world.
Al-Awaji said Saudi Arabia was interested in investing in products which could produce energy in an efficient way.
"The subject of energy efficiency is one of the topics of utmost importance to us (in Saudi Arabia) because by investing in energy efficiency we believe that it is possible to provide a large part of the considerable consumption of energy," he said.
Solar power could help meet peak demand for power in a country where electricity surges in summer, in combination with Saudi oil- and gas-fired power plants.
Andreas Hergenroether, a delegate of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry who attended the fair, said German companies wanted to work together with Saudi Arabia on solar energy projects.
"This exhibition I think it is very important and it's really step in the right direction. I think we should show that Saudi Arabia has a lot to offer in the field of solar energy and there are a lot of company interested in this field and we are looking for new partners, we are very interested in the Saudi exhibitors here. I think they are really following a strategy in the field and it shows also that something is going on this field," Hergenroether said.
The world's solar power generating capacity will grow by between 200 and 400 percent over the next five years, with Asia and other emerging markets overtaking leadership from Europe, the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) said in its market outlook until 2016.
Germany, the world's biggest PV market, is likely to be the main global driver this year, followed by China, the United States and Japan. The pace of growth will slow in Italy, which was the fastest growing solar market in 2011, EPIA's Secretary General Reinhold Buttgereit said.
PV is the process by which sunlight is converted into energy. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
