- Story Text: The Jewellery Arabia exhibition kicks off in Manama. The event is one of the largest jewellery exhibitions in the region, providing a platform for designers to exhibit their latest collections.
Thousands attended the 21st Jewellery Arabia exhibition in Bahrain's capital city Manama. The five-day event, sponsored by the Prime Minister of Bahrain, his Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, was held in the Bahrain Exhibition Centre from October 16 to October 20.
The annual event, which began in 1992, is an opportunity for jewellery houses and watch manufacturers to show off their products and designs to a mass audience.
For Fawzi al-Shehabi, the exhibition's Sales and Marketing Director, the event is of great importance to Bahrain, as it puts the Kingdom firmly on the map.
"The Jewellery Arabia exhibition today is important for Bahrain and the Middle East - the location of Bahrain on the international map of exhibitions and it has become one of the most important jewellery exhibitions in the Middle East," he said in an interview with Reuters Television.
Visitors from all over the Gulf region, in their thousands, attended the exhibition which showcases over 600 exhibitors from over 30 countries. From Chopard to Raymond Weil, Diamant Noir to Piaget, expensive jewels and pricey watches are on display and ready for purchase by those whose pockets run deep enough.
Al-Shehabi said he expected the number of attendees in 2012 to exceed the impressive 42,500 of 2011.
"We have reached 19...20,000 visitors. Today we still have an entire day ahead of us and we are optimistic that the number of visitors will increase to over 60, 000 visitors, possibly. The exhibition in 2011, we reached 42,500 visitors in the space of five days and this year the number of participants is higher than last year - 2011," said al-Shehabi.
