- Story Text: GCC approves security cooperation across six Gulf countries.
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) interior ministers met in Riyadh on Tuesday (November 13) to approve an agreement on security cooperation amongst the six Gulf Co-operation Council countries.
The deal aims to promote unified policies that will cement security, stability and sustainable development in the region, the Kuwait News agency reported.
GCC Secretary General Abdullatif Al Zayani told Reuters Television the GCC decided to recognise the Syrian opposition coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
"Acknowledging the Syrian coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people gives it the form that can now be negotiated with and dealing with... Representing the Syrian people in all fields... This is left to the Arab League as it is the right side to deal with the Syrian file," he said.
On Sunday (November 11), Twenty months into their bloody uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, fragmented Syrian opposition groups struck a deal in Qatar to form a broad coalition.
Joining the Gulf states, France became the first European power to recognise Syria's new opposition coalition as the sole representative of its people and said on Tuesday it would look into arming rebels against Assad once they form a government.
