- Story Text: Moslem Pilgrims gathered at Riyad at the start of the Hajj Festival pilgrimage to Macca. This pilgrimage which each Muslim is expected to perform at least once in life, unless prevented by illness, begins on the 8th of the Dhu 'l-Hijja, the last month of the Muslim year.
The pilgrims came from Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and the Gulf States.
After preliminary devotions the pilgrims will set out again from Mecca for the Mount of Mercy (Jabal ar-Rahma), about nine miles away. On their return two days later, sacrifices are offered in the wayside village of Mina.
The "great festival" is celebrated throughout the Muslim world for three days beginning on the day of sacrifice in Mina. New clothes are worn, friends visited and gifts exchanged.
