- Story Text: Middle East oil emissaries Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani of Saudi Arabia and Belaid Abdelssalem of Algeria arrived in Rome on Thursday (January 10) for two days of talks with Italian government ministers. The two men were seeking a clear-cut Italian position on Arab territories occupied by Israel in 1967. The emissaries said that the adoption of a "positive" position concerning the occupied lands was the key to the resumption of normal economic relations between the Arab oil producing countries and Italy.
Sheikh Yamani, who is the Oil Minister in Saudi Arabia, and Mr. Abdelssalem, the Algerian Industry and Power Minister, met with a number of members of the Italian cabinet and with Prime Minister Mariano Rumor. The Arab emissaries said they were very satisfied with the outcome of the meeting with Prime Minister Rumor on Friday (January 11) night.
When the two emissaries arrived in Rome, they denied there was any oil embargo imposed on Europe. In fact, they said, Europe was receiving more oil now than a year ago. Sheikh Yamani said, "We have seen that Europe has problems and this displeases us a lot. We increased production straight away because of Europe."
SYNOPSIS: Two Arab oil emissaries arrived in Rome on Thursday on their tour of European nations. Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Vamani and Algerian Industry Minister Belaid Avdelssalem are explaining Arab oil policy to European governments. Antonio Giolitti, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, was the first of a number of senior Italian government officials to meet with the representatives. The emissaries were demanding Italy adopt a clear-cut policy of opposition to the Israeli occupation of Arab lands in return for a resumption of normal economic relations.
Sheikh Yamani and Mr. Abdelssalem then went to the Foreign Ministry to meet with Italian Foreign Minister Aldo Moro. They also held talks with Industry Minister Ciriaco de Mita and Prime Minister Mariano Rumor during their two day visit to Rome. After the meeting with Prime Minister, Sheikh Yamani said he was very happy with the outcome of the discussion.
