- Story Text: Leaders of Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia ended a two-day summit on Thursday (December 29) with strong support for Syria's stand in deadlocked peace talks with Israel.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Saudi King Fahd also called on Iraq to implement United Nations (U.N.) resolutions for the sake of its people and Arab security.
In a statement given to reporters at the end of the summit, the three leaders said they wanted to achieve comprehensive and just peace in the region and had exerted sincere efforts to remove obstacles in the way of peace.
Speaking to reporters later, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said the summit was concerned at the slow pace of the Middle East peace process.
Referring to the construction of Jewish settlements in part of the West Bank under Israeli control, he said he considered that building settlements or expanding settlements was an obstacle to peace.
As Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara prepared to leave at the airport, he said the summit had given its support to Syria's position in the peace talks with Israel.
There was full agreement on how to approach the Arab situation and how to improve it, Al-Shara said. There was also a consensus to support the peace process and to extend every support possible for Syria, he said.
He said that there was some criticism directed at Israel for creating "obstacles" to the peace process.
