- Story Text: Superstar DJ David Guetta continues his meteoric journey as DJ-cum-producer with a new chartbreaker, 'Nothing but the Beat.' The Parisian, who was in the German city of Cologne on Friday (August 16) to introduce his latest dance-friendly album, has been turning a beat for the best part of the last decade.
Guetta's debut studio album, 'Just a Little More Love' hit the UK charts in 2002. Since then he has been on a mission to combine the main strands of American and British pop sounds, adding hip-hop vocals to foot-tapping dance beats.
"You know, I come from a more underground background, but you know, I always loved music and I wanted our music to be as big as hip-hop and pop and rock, you know. And I created that crossover and I am really happy about it. I love it," Guetta said in between playing a set for the Cologne crowd.
Guetta's music has long transcended the club scene to hit the airwaves in Europe and the U.S. His fifth and latest album will be released as a double disc album, with one electronic and the other vocal as a homage to his original fans.
"I also want to use my success for people that are buying my albums because they know my songs on the radio, also for them to understand where I am coming from. So that is why I really wanted to do this double album and also for my fans - my original fans - who have been following me for years as a DJ," Guetta said.
Known for his humility and his loyalty to the decks over the spotlight, Guetta is now in the prime position of waiting for star collaborators to come to him. Already known for collaborations with R&B singer Kelly Rowland and 'The Black Eyed Peas,' 'Nothing but the Beat,' features sassy sounds from Jennifer Hudson and Lil Wayne as well as a reappearances from Will.i.am and Akon.
"To be honest, I have never run after the big stars. They came to me, kind of by accident after the success of 'Love is Gone,' that was very big in the U.S. but only in the clubs.- But never in America, dance music was being played on the radio and when Will.I.Am asked me to produce records, we made 'I Gotta Feeling,' together and at the same time 'Sexy Bitch,' with Akon and at the same time, 'When Love Takes Over,' that was like three huge records at the same moment, so everybody started to call me, you know, and of course it is a blessing because those people that take my music and they take it to the next level, so for me it is like a fairy tale," Guetta says of his success.
Now one of the most sought after music producers, Guetta has sold over three million albums and 15 million singles worldwide, but does he dance to his own tunes?
"The first time I am in the car and I hear my song, you know, it makes...it's crazy...it makes me go crazy, I love it, you know and...But if I am listening to my own music when i am home. No!" he says laughing.
