- Story Text: Spurs star David Ginola is on a mission to draw
attention to the plight of Cambodia's thousands of landmine
victims.
The former winger with the French national team is on a
five day trip to Cambodia designed raise awareness about the
devastation caused by the weapons.
On Thursday (May 18) Ginola visited a center run by the
American Red Cross which focuses on rehabilitating victims
using custom designed prosthetics.
Ginola, who was last season's Footballer of the Year and
Players' Player of the Year in England, said he had taken five
days out of his schedule to visit Cambodia, but said he wished
he could spend more time in the country.
"I cannot give the time I would like to give because I
have games and training to do" Ginola told reporters
"We finished the season on Sunday and here we are....
its a good thing for the Red Cross, to make people aware of
the problem around the world, landmines are a problem for for
alot of countries", he continued.
Ginola later played a brief game of football with
several amputees, and came away thoroughly impressed.
"I can bring some of the players to England, and there
is a lot of work to do in just a few days...but so far we are
having a wonderful time" he said.
Cambodia has one of the highest concentrations of
unexploded landmines in the world leftover from years of
internal conflict.
On Friday (May 19) Ginola will travel with a mine
clearance group from the United Nations to learn first hand
how mines are cleared.
