- Story Text: The new world Featherweight boxing champion, David Kotei Poison, arrived home in Ghana on Friday (26 September) to a state welcome after beating Mexican Reuben Olivares on points.
Thousands of people were at Accra Airport to welcome Poison, as he is called. He was greeted by top-ranking government officials and crowds of people waving banners.
Later, 25-year-old Poison was escorted to Osu Castle near the capital to be awarded the state award, the Grand Medal, by Ghanaian Head of State, Colonel Acheampong.
Poison was also presented with a cheque for 1,000 cedis (about 415 pounds sterling) and he was given a three-bedroomed house.
In 36 professional fights since 1966, Poison has recorded 21 knockouts, 13 wins on points, two draws and only one loss.
