- Story Text: Afghanistan's Interior Ministry says abducted Briton was killed by al
Qaeda.
A British man kidnapped in Afghanistan was found dead, three days
after being seized by gunmen during a bloody attack on a convoy, an Afghan
government spokesman said on Sunday (September 4, 2005).
David Addison, who was working on security for a road project in the
west of the country, was kidnapped along with an interpreter after gunmen
ambushed their convoy and killed three police escorts on Wednesday (August 31).
"With sadness we got reports that during the search operation, the
Afghan national police and the coalition forces in Afghanistan found the dead
body of Mr. David. We believe that the Taliban and the remnants of Al Qaeda
and terrorists have killed him after abduction," said Interior Ministry
spokesman Lutfullah Mashal.
Addison was seized on the main road between the south-western city of
Kandahar and the western city of Herat.
Taliban guerrillas, who have not been known to operate in force in the
west, said they had kidnapped and killed him.
Nearly four years after U.S.-led forces forced the Taliban from power,
security remains a major problem in Afghanistan.
"We had already told and advised International community
expatriates who are living in Afghanistan, NGO workers, to be vigilant and
careful while travelling out side main cities. In order to provide better
security on highways the highway police have been strengthened, we have
deployed more police officer on Kabul-Kandahar highway, Kandahar-Herat highway
and other important highways of Afghanistan in order to provide
security," said Mashal.
Taliban guerrillas are battling about 20,000 U.S. troops, mostly in
the south and east. About 10,000 NATO-led peacekeepers operate mostly in
Kabul, the north and the west.
