- Story Text: The World Cup has gone to the heads of the Japanese
public and free David Beckham haircuts are being offered on
the streets of Tokyo.
But watch out, Beckham's fickle mop may once more
metamorphosis -- rumours have it that his hairstylist has
arrived in Japan.
Just watching England play in the World Cup tournament
on television or at the stadium is not enough for some
Japanese infected by the soccer bug.
They want to be as close as possible to their icon David
Beckham and since the start of the games at the end of May,
hairdressers in Tokyo have been inundated with requests for
copies of soccer players' styles with the Beckham "soft
Mohawk" the number one favourite.
Hairdresser Hidehito Shimizu has been giving free Beckham
haircuts to 10 people a day as part of an effort to build up
enthusiasm for soccer.
Every day for a week he and his assistant have been taking
their scissors, combs and mousse to a shopping arcade in the
trendy Shibuya district of Tokyo to turn passers-by locks into
versions of the England captain's spiky style.
"Foreign hair is different from Japanese hair, so it is
difficult to do. I've cut the sides really short and used a
lot of wax to make the top stand up so it looks like
Beckham's," he said.
Most of his customers are pleased with their new look, but
are too embarrassed to admit it.
"No. I don't think I look like Beckham. If you take away
the hair you'll see I don't look like him at all," said
39-year-old Kazuo Koyama.
"I am too embarrassed to even think think that I look like
Beckham, but I like it, it has an edge to it," added Kazuhiko
Matsutani, 23.
The rain and heat of World Cup co-hosts Japan and South
Korea have wilted Beckham's trademark Mohawk and tabloids say
his personal hairdresser is due to arrive this week to make
repairs or even give him a new look.
By the time England's game against Brazil on Saturday
(June 22), the Beckham wanna-bes may be the only ones with his
pointy hair.
