- Story Text: Argentine President Maria Estela Peron attended a commemoration mass for the Spanish dictator General Franco in Buenos Aires on Thursday (27 November). General Franco, aged 82 died the previous Thursday after several weeks' serious illness.
Senora Peron was a personal friend of General Franco. After her husband the late President Juan Peron was exiled in 1955, they eventually settled in Madrid. When they left Spain after twelve years to make their triumphant return to Argentina in 1973 General Franco gave the couple a ceremonial farewell.
Crowds gathered outside the Cathedral to see Senora Peron who was making only her second public appearance in a month. She resumed work the day before the service quashing rumours that her health was failing. Earlier in November, the 44-year-old President had been in hospital with what was officially described as a gall bladder complaint.
The day before the service Senora Peron faced rebellion by a large group of Peronist congressmen accusing her of abandoning the platform on which Peronism was voted into power. The country is also in the midst of a large scale security sweep to try to halt the terrorism that has killed hundreds of people in Argentina this year.
