- Story Text: George Clooney brought politics to the red carpet at the premiere of his latest thriller "The Ides of March."
Clooney and the film's star Ryan Gosling posed for photos and chatted with reporters before heading in to the screening.
Asked about his turn as a co-writer and director, Clooney said he would do it again if he was interested in the topic.
"It's gotta be something I like, it's got to be something I want to see and spend five years working on. It's sort of that version of it, you know what I mean."
The film tells the story of an idealistic presidential campaign staffer, played by Gosling, who gets a crash course in dirty politics.
Clooney said the film wasn't crafted as a political film, but rather as a thriller.
In "The Ides of March" Clooney portrays Governor Mike Morris, a Democratic presidential candidate on a fast track to the White House.
In real life, the actor has been rumored to be considering a turn as a politician.
Cast member Jeffrey Wright had a few words of advice however, for his director.
"No actor, including any actor who has been or is now a politician should be a politician," Wright said.
The film made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and opened to good reviews.
Actor Paul Giamatti said he thinks the film could in fact be an Oscar contender, which
"I could imagine that this movie will garner Oscar buzz. I hope it does. Yeah, I think it will. People seem to like it," Giamatti said.
Clooney said the dark view of the political world portrayed in the film, does not reflect his own views on Washington.
Asked about his political aspirations, the actor joked sarcastically with reporters," That's a good idea, seems like it'd be a fun job, doesn't it.
Clooney will have another film premiering at the festival, titled "The Descendants."
In all 268 features will screen at TIFF over 11 days. Attendees will be looking at a group of films that might turn into Oscar contenders following on from last year's "The King's Speech," which won top prize at TIFF. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
