United States President George Bush on Friday announced trade concessions for Poland which will allow Polish goods freer access to the US consumer market.
In a White House ceremony, Bush signed a proclamation adding Poland to the list of nations which qualify for a system of concessionary trading arrangements known as the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP). The GSP designation lifts duties on about half of the products on the US tariff schedule. Poland's new status is expected to provide savings of between 3 and 10 percent for the producers of Polish exports to the United States.
The concession does not guarantee sales in the United States, but is designed to provide a savings margin that could prove decisive on the American market and thus spur increased trading activity. Based on 1988 trade figures, Polish products worth 73.3 million US dollars were imported into the United States in categories for which tariffs now will be lifted. That would amount to a potential savings, based on that year's volume, of 3.5 million US dollars.
In addition to the new trade concessions, Bush noted that the US government was committed to a three-year economic assistance program to Poland totaling 1 billions US dollars and has already contributed 200 million US dollars in aid since last spring. The Western alliance has promised more than 8 billion US dollars in economic aid to Poland over the three-year period.
