- Story Text: Mr. George Wallace, the Governor of the State of Alabama, in the southern part of United States of America, arrived in London on the first leg of his proposed two week European tour on Monday (13 October).
The tour is seen by observers as an opportunity to broaden the Governor's appeal as a prospective candidate in the next U.S. Presidential elections. Governor Wallace holds views which some regard as extreme right-wing. He survived an assassination attempt about three years ago but was partially paralysed by a bullet and has been in a Wheelchair ever since.
The two weeks will also reveal how well Mr. Wallace can bear up under the strain of constant travelling and the meeting of foreign heads of government......and the pressure from newsmen all over western Europe.
During the two weeks Mr. Wallace will be followed closely by Alabama state troopers and U.S secret service agents.
One of the first items on the Governor's travelling agenda was a quick visit to the Prime Minister of Britain, Mr. Harold Wilson.
Governor Wallace arrived at the Prime Minister's Official residence at number 10 Downing Street in London. Mr. Wilson was not there to greet him, he was out on official business. But shortly after the Governor's arrival Mr. Wilson returned and the two men spoke for a short time.
