- Story Text: Challenger George "King" Aidoo battered Ghana's Middleweight boxing champion Joe Oke to defeat in the 11th round of their title fight in Accra on Saturday (12 April).
It was a major upset after Oke -- showing all the champion's authority -- had spent the first seven rounds piling up a commanding points lead. But the aggressive Aidoo, a Ghanaian based in the United States, kept coming forward to wear the champion down with good combinations of punches.
From the eighth round, Oke went on the retreat, and was frequently caught against the ropes as the challenger looked for a knockout punch.
But the tiring Oke drew on his reserves of ringcraft, and might have hung on to save his title with the points lead amassed during the early rounds.
Then in round 11, Aidoo found the opening he had been seeking and sent Oke down for the mandatory count of eight. After that, Oke threw in the towel -- and the huge crowd at Accra's Sports Stadium acclaimed a worthy new middleweight champion, George "King" Aidoo.
