- Story Text: A former protégé of Chanel fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, Canadian-born designer Jean-Pierre Braganza showed a softened rock chick collection on the first day of London Fashion Week on Friday (September 17).
With a client list ranging from the Kings of Leon to Nine Inch Nails, Braganza's spring/summer 2011 designs were inspired by his love of heavy metal, which lost some of the hard edge the designer is known for and replaced by a gentleness and fluidity in some of his clothes.
Pastels replaced his traditional black as he showed loose dresses which gave way to his signature form-fitting gowns. Braganza played with the idea of clothes hanging off the body as he dropped waists, jackets and waist coats to elongate the body.
"It has undertones of heavy metal but it's whispered by fairies. It's like a rock-nymph if you will. She's matured, she's softened, she has a more romantic side to her so I embrace the two, the romanticism and the hard aggression of heavy metal and combine them into (name of collection) 'Incendiati'," Braganza told Reuters Television backstage after the show.
High-heel shoes were designed by Nicholas Kirkwood and had a small platform on the sole of the foot, creating the illusion of height, but making them more wearable.
Braganza has also designed a number of limited-edition "Boris Bikes", the bicycle-hire scheme initiated by London mayor Boris Johnson. Since designing the bespoke spokes, some fans of the designer have begun calling them "Braganza Bikes". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
