- Story Text: World renowned fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld won a lifetime achievement award at Berlin's Fashion Week on Saturday (July 19).
With his trademark white ponytail, high collar and black sunglasses, the German designer arrived at the 'Elle Fashion Star' award ceremony in high spirits.
"Lifetime? Im not dead yet. It's not that bad yet. No, I mean it is really nice. The German Elle is really good, they are great people. Im happy about this. I think it's flattering," Lagerfeld said.
Michael Michalsky, another German designer who on Friday (July 18) presented his collection at the fashion week, said it was Lagerfeld who inspired him to get into the trade.
"I have been a Karl Lagerfeld fan since I was a young boy. I grew up in the countryside and my window to the world was the magazine "Stern". When I was thirteen I read an article about him being the senior designer at Chloe, and I was so fascinated by this article that I decided to become a designer myself," Michalsky said.
74-year old Lagerfeld seemed overwhelmed by the award which was presented to him by supermodel Claudia Schiffer.
"I am not good at thanking people and I am not good at making speeches. I am only good at small talk and wordplay. But in reality we are not here for me but to celebrate 20 years of "Elle" and for the organisation, for the Burda family, to whom you also belong. And for me, the 20 years of Elle are almost more important than my own things, which I know all too well," Lagerfeld told the audience.
Lagerfeld is one of the most important figures in fashion and has been at the top of his profession for decades. He is famed for his visionary designs for fashion house Chanel and other popular designer labels. His creations have dressed scores of celebrities including singers Madonna and Kylie Minogue. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
