- Story Text: The Paris of the South is strutting its stuff as Buenos Aires High Fashion Week (BAAM) launched its 29th edition in the Argentine capital, showcasing the Spring 2008 and Summer 2009 lines.
The ten-day event took place at an exclusive downtown Buenos Aires hotel and began on Monday (September 1).
The Tuesday (September 2) lineup showcased two of Argentina's premier haute couture lines, Pia Carregal and Sathya.
The Buenos Aires-based Pia Carregal line set out to create a romantic flair for its line with natural-fitting dresses evoking a classic elegance for warm weather wear.
Through the use of quieter tones of crimsons, maroons and neons, Pia Carregal created an aura of a romantic allure, which was often topped off by accessories like a lone eye-catching earring.
Later in the evening's lineup was the Sathya line, presented by its owner and designer, Monica Socolosky.
"A lot of work is artisanal. I do the hand-work with fine care.
And as a consequence, it's artisanal. It's going more for high fashion, and not ready-to-wear, more in the line of haute couture," Socolosky said of her work, referring to the ready-to-wear versus high fashion distinction in the fashion world.
Known for a feminist take, Socolosky showed off a line chalk full of bold cuts for liberated women.
The accessible and light-fitting dresses were accompanied by mature lipstick tones, making the look one for all seasons.
In total, 31 designers will send models down the runway before the eventon Friday (September 12).
As a testament to Buenos Aires' regional heft as a fashion mecca, both Ecuador and Paraguay are showcasing some of their fashion innovations over the course of the 10-day extravaganza.
