So I understand certain things about it. But I really hope it can work, you never know in this world. I'm sure it's going to be a learning curve but as a starting point of where I wanted it to be seen, and look like and the quality of everything, I'm really really pleased." Anybody to follow in his footsteps is very difficult but I think Giles will be a big success because he's all about modernity and Monsieur Ungaro was also about modernity and fun and party and light-heartedness so I think it will work very well." - Story Text: A garden party was thrown by British designer Giles Deacon for the legendary but lately unstable Parisian fashion house Ungaro on Monday (October 4).
Since Emanuel Ungaro, who founded the house in 1965, retired in 2004, the brand has seen six different designers, including last season's heavily criticised collaboration with Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan.
"I mean I wouldn't have thought I would be cleaning out Lindsay Lohan's desk at the start of this year. I wouldn't have put that on my money," Deacon told Reuters Television at the show's colourful presentation.
The Brit, who's known for his bold geometric prints and sense of humour for his own eponymous line, paid tribute to Ungaro's legacy of pastels, draping and lacings of black.
"I didn't really get a specific remit as such and I just knew from a personal perspective I wanted to recapture that vivaciousness and the subtly and the sensuality, softness and the drape and the beautiful fabrics and the element of quality that has been missing from the house the last five years I feel," said Deacon.
Stand out pieces of the collection included evening gowns and cocktail dresses, including a dress in powder pink chiffon dentelle de Calais with ostrich feathers and organza fringes. Daywear suits in peach tweed "lightweight tailoring" and daisy motifs printed on swimsuits, dresses and sunglasses also added an upbeat mood to the pret-a-porter line.
Deacon said he was hoping to finally bring some stability to the otherwise faltering house and recounted his success with his own label:
"I've run my own business for eight years. I worked for a lot of houses. I'm not a young actress. So I understand certain things about it. But I really hope it can work, you never know in this world. I'm sure it's going to be a learning curve but as a starting point of where I wanted it to be seen, and look like and the quality of everything, I'm really really pleased."
British milliner Stephen Jones worked with both Emanuel Ungaro and Deacon and said the new designer wanted to create a fun, light, party-like atmosphere, so he made mohican headpieces.
"I think it's a difficult job. Monsieur Ungaro set up this extraordinary house with a real history. Anybody to follow in his footsteps is very difficult but I think Giles will be a big success because he's all about modernity and Monsieur Ungaro was also about modernity and fun and party and light-heartedness so I think it will work very well," said Jones.
